Overview

What is an offshore medical?

An offshore medical — also called an offshore fitness examination — certifies that you are medically fit to work in offshore environments: oil platforms, wind turbines at sea, ships and underwater operations.

International operators require a valid certificate before any deployment. The most recognised standards are OGUK/OEUK (UK continental shelf), AWMF (German continental shelf) and Hardanger/NOGEPA (Norwegian continental shelf).

At Samedos in Bremen we issue certificates for all three standards — with short waiting times and consultation in four languages.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can I get an appointment?
In most cases we can offer a slot within 48 hours. For urgent deployments, please call us directly on +49 421 63997-76.
What is the difference between OGUK/OEUK and AWMF?
OGUK/OEUK certificates are required for work on the UK continental shelf. The AWMF guideline covers German offshore sites (North Sea and Baltic Sea). We issue both certificates.
How long is the certificate valid?
Certificates are generally valid for 2 years. Workers aged 40 and over must renew their OGUK/OEUK certificate annually. We will remind you in good time.
Do you perform Hardanger/NOGEPA medicals for Norwegian operations?
Yes. Dr. Janssen holds the relevant certifications and we carry out Hardanger/NOGEPA examinations for work on the Norwegian continental shelf.
What documents should I bring?
Please bring a valid ID or passport, your vaccination certificate, glasses or contact lenses (if worn), your previous offshore medical certificate (if any), a list of current medications, and relevant specialist reports. A safety pass is helpful but not required — we also sell one on site for €3. With good preparation the examination can be completed in under one hour.
Is Samedos an approved OGUK/OEUK examining centre?
Yes. Dr. med. Jörg Janssen is an approved Appointed Doctor for OGUK/OEUK examinations. He also holds AWMF and Hardanger/NOGEPA certifications.
Can the examination be conducted in English?
Absolutely. Dr. Janssen speaks German, English, French and Spanish. The consultation and examination can be held entirely in English.
What happens if I do not pass the medical?
If you do not meet all criteria at the time of examination, we will advise you on what steps to take. A temporary restricted certificate or a follow-up examination may be possible depending on the findings.
